If you have a budding little pilot on your hands, visit the Solent Sky Museum, which is located near Ocean Village in the city. The museum houses 18 aircraft including the famous Spitfire, which was developed in the area. The Southampton area is well-known for its experimental and development work between 1908 and the 1960s.

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard has loads for all the family to explore. You and the kids can explore the great historic ships, including the HMS Victory where you can stand on the spot where Nelson was killed. The museums will occupy Mummy and Daddy and Action Stations is the place for children. This area is packed full of hand-on activities including flight simulators, various physical challenges and even laser quest for over 6s. The Dockyards has a restaurant and a number of cafes, or three picnic areas if you prefer.

For your little sailors, Nautikidz Mini Port is a must. There are two sites in Portsmouth, one at the Historic Dockyard and one at Gunwharf Quays. At Mini Port you can hire an electrically powered mini ship. What will you choose? A Royal Navy destroyer? Or perhaps a ferry? Life jackets are, of course, provided and the ships are so easy to drive that you can let the kids have a go. Nautikidz Mini Port is open between the Easter holidays and October half term.

At Gunwharf Quays is the Spinnaker Tower, which offers three viewing decks with views stretching 23 miles over Portsmouth Harbour and the Solent. For the very brave, try the Sky Walk, where you can walk across a glass floor, 100m above sea level! Gunwharf Quays also offers outlet shopping, dining and leisure activities including bowling and a cinema.

Beaulieu, in the heart of the New Forest, is home to the National Motor Museum and much more. Any petrol head or aspiring racing driver will love seeing all the cars including vehicles featured in James Bond films and Top Gear, as well as Mr Weasley’s flying Ford Anglia from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. Kids will love the bird’s eye view of the ground from the monorail, a ride on a bus from 1912 and Dipstick’s Driving Circuit, which lets little ones get behind the wheel.

Marwell Zoo, just outside of Winchester, lets you get up close to over 170 exotic and endangered species within a stunning 140-acre park. There’s so much to see at Marwell Zoo, the kids will be entertained for hours. Animals to see include penguins, lemurs, snow leopards and zebra.
