Flamingos In Tights
Paultons Park's 8 Greater Flamingos were on the move this week, they were taken to join an existing group at Marwell Zoo. Transporting the birds, however, turned out to be a bit tricky so keepers decided to use an unusual bit of equipment - ladies tights.
The Flamingos arrived at Paultons Park last year and keepers thought that all the birds were female, until one of them produced an egg and hatched a healthy chick. Accordingly it was decided that they would do well as part of a breeding programme and offered to Marwell Zoo.
Flamingos have a delicate bone structure, especially in their legs and so transportation was going to be tricky. The answer was using ladies tights. The tights were placed carefully over the Flamingos' bodies and they were then carried for the duration of the short journey in straw lined boxes. The operation was a success and all 8 birds were moved in under an hour with only a solitary pair of tights getting laddered.
